In 2006, we completed the re-roofing of St. Michael’s & All Angels Church in Welshampton, Shropshire.

Phillips & Curry were asked to tender for this project due to our expertise in slating. The original Penrhyn green and heather banded slates were stripped from all the roof slopes. The nave was re-covered using reclaimed slates on the front slope, replicating the original pattern. On the rear nave and aisle slope new Westmorland green and blue slates were used to substitute Welsh slate as Penrhyn green is no longer produced. The apse provided a technical challenge in maintaining the even, zigzag pattern in the bands around the radius and keeping the tops of theVs in line on a curved, diminishing pattern.

Due to the nature of the work and the potential need for timber repairs, a temporary scaffold roof was designed and erected over the entire church to eliminate any risk to the valuable internal architecture and artifacts within the building.
